Idaho breaks record with $254 million in grocery tax refunds, delivering affordability boost for families, seniors

Boise, Idaho – To directly address the cost of food and make life more affordable, Governor Brad Little announced today the state has returned a record-breaking $254.8 million to residents through the 2025 grocery tax credit – the largest refund in state history.

That is $49 million more than what Idahoans received last year, and the total is still climbing as the Idaho State Tax Commission processes final claims.

"We know high grocery prices are squeezing family budgets and hitting our seniors hard. That’s exactly why the Legislature and I have focused on giving back more in tax relief. We are committed to making Idaho more affordable, and this record-breaking food tax relief is proof that we’re committed to keeping more of your money where it belongs – in your wallet,” Governor Little said.

The record-setting relief comes after Governor Little signed House Bill 231 into law in 2025, expanding the grocery tax credit so families keep more of what they earn when buying food. The boost builds on the more than $6.1 billion in total tax relief delivered by the Governor and the Legislature since he took office.

So far, the Tax Commission has processed 813,241 food tax credit claims for 2025, totaling $254,849,965. With more tax returns still being processed, that number will continue to rise.

By comparison, Idaho issued $205,162,246 across 822,401 claims for 2024, and $201,902,723 across 805,341 claims for 2023.
